Rachel Yuile Music (Many Hands charity concerts)

Rachel Yuile Dip ABRSM LRSM PMEPTA Composer and Piano Teacher

The composing bug got me at an early age, long before I had piano lessons! I write music for solo piano, chamber groups, and for singers. My elder son Graham is a tenor and while he was studying at St Andrews University we enjoyed giving recitals, which included our own compositions, in the Younger Hall. One of my current projects is to set selected Scottish poems to music. (If it seems to "sing" to me when I read it, it eventually turns into a song!) A particular favourite for both Graham and myself is "Luv Sang", a beautiful little poem by Dundee poet Ellie McDonald which I set to music in November 2010. We were delighted to get the poet's seal of approval when we performed it for her in the presence of Sheena Wellington at the Wighton Centre, Dundee. Now that Graham lives in South Australia, we rarely get the chance to perform together, but in March 2016 I got off a flight from Scotland to Adelaide and went straight to an outdoor concert to accompany him onstage. Slightly surreal, but fun!

In 2018, I received a Highly Commended award in the Epta Composing Competition for my piano piece "Autumn Elegy" and enjoyed a workshop in London with the adjudicator John Kember.
I enjoy writing humorous songs for the wedding receptions and birthday celebrations of relatives and friends, and usually end up getting an a cappella choir together at the last minute to perform such work. Ideas for solo piano music are usually floating around in my head and I find myself scribbling down ideas between lessons, or when I should be doing something more mundane!

Music for wedding services has figured strongly in my output in recent years, as nieces and nephews grow up and get married.
